Chips, Candy, and a Soda: Rachel’s Story

“The Pattern at 6, Noon, and 3:30”
Source: fieldwork case example (pseudonym)
Anchored to: the moment sorting receipts by time revealed Rachel’s routine

In her second class, Rachel arrived with a fistful of crumpled receipts. We started the way most financial literacy programs do: sorting by category, food, clothing, entertainment. She kept asking where to put the junk food. There was so much of it we gave it its own category. The total for one week: $125, entirely on chips, candy, and soda.

Generic financial literacy stops right there. Stop spending $125 a week on junk food, here’s why it’s bad for your health, next lesson.

I wanted the WHY. So we resorted the same receipts, this time by date and time. A pattern jumped out immediately: purchases clustered around 6 a.m., noon, and 3:30 in the afternoon, every single day.

I asked Rachel about the 6 a.m. purchase. She wakes late most mornings, stops at the gas station on the way out. No time to pack a lunch, so lunch is the same stop, same shelf. By the end of a shift she’s exhausted and starving, her words, and the cycle closes itself out on the drive home.

That thirty-second answer explained more about her finances, her health, and her daily structure than any budgeting worksheet could have. Her prediabetes and weight struggles weren’t a mystery anymore. They were the visible result of a wake-up pattern nobody had ever asked her about.

This is what I mean when I say the Fresh Start Method looks for the why before it offers a fix.

I tell the rest of Rachel’s story in this week’s episode.

Has a number in your own work ever turned out to be a symptom of something else entirely once you asked why?
